India Yellow Peas

New Delhi: In a move aimed at enhancing the availability of pulses and stabilizing prices, India has decided to eliminate the minimum import price (MIP) for yellow peas and permit duty-free shipments until March 31, 2024.

The Directorate-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification stating that the import of yellow peas is now «Free,» contingent upon registration under the Import Monitoring system. This measure takes immediate effect and remains applicable until March 31, 2024.

In the fiscal year 2022-23, India imported yellow peas totaling $0.14 million, exclusively from Russia.

Previously, yellow peas imports were subject to restrictions, involving an annual quota, a minimum import price (MIP) set at Rs 200 and above CIF per kilogram, and limitations to the Kolkata Sea port. It’s worth noting that these import restrictions did not extend to government commitments under bilateral or regional agreements or Memoranda of Understanding.

The DGFT emphasized that all yellow peas imports until March 31, 2024, must undergo compulsory registration under the Import Monitoring System. Furthermore, specific procedures for the prior registration of yellow peas consignments will be communicated separately.
